Gurisa Universe

Universo Gurisa

Together with the weavers, we create unique and unrepeatable pieces, like small works of art. Gurisa is a product that pays attention to detail, environmental consciousness, and also offers the possibility of customization and adaptation according to the needs of each user. The main objective is to innovate in the world of design while always respecting traditional techniques. To re-appreciate the beauty of the artisan process, to transmit the history of this craft, which tells a story at each stage of its creation.

Gurisa (young woman in the Guarani language) is a handmade fashion accessory project created with the ñanduti technique, a Paraguayan technique that is an acculturation of the Spanish "soles de Tenerife" lace, which was brought to Latin America during colonization and was readapted and revalued by the Paraguayan people.

With this project, I intend to continue teaching the technique that was previously passed down from generation to generation but has gradually been lost. This technique is "endangered" due to the scarce generational succession. I also want to create an awareness of revaluing handicrafts, understanding their origin, their design process and production times, the hands that create them, and the materials used. So that each consumer takes a piece of this history home with them. These designs can be translated as a story of threads intertwined in the shapes of flowers, animals, and all the essence that came from the Guarani jungle.

My name is Macarena Bordon, I am a textile designer and founder of the GURISA brand. I have been living in Madrid for 5 years. I am from Misiones, a province in northern Argentina, between Paraguay and Brazil. As I mentioned before, I studied fashion design, and then I decided to specialize in the textile world, which is where I have always been most interested. Different types of fabric mark our life stages and accompany us in various rituals of our society, sheltering and covering us. My history with ñanduti lace began when I was very young, as it is a fabric that has marked many stages of my life.
